Gordon Town's Hidden Treasure

Updated: May 19, 2018

Rivers have a rather peculiar way of replenishing your spirit as it allows you to feel in tune with nature. If you have never experienced this feeling before, visit Gordon Town River. It's not far either, its actually 10 minutes away from Papine. Unbelievable right?

It's highly likely that you have never heard about what I believe is Gordon Towns best kept secret. It's remarkable how you'll probably never notice the river if you're driving through unless your definitely trying to see it. It runs between what Jamaicans call a "gully", as such it appears to be running underground.

Have no fear, getting to the river is actually very easy. Along the river bank, one can easily find paths that take you down a hill and into the river. However, the most popular path is located adjacent the Louise Bennett-Coverly All Age school. Jah Blue, a resident of Gordon Town has his own little cool out spot, where he has created wooden benches, huts and a small shop to cater to the needs of those visiting the river. Whether to take a swim, smoke some weed or simply reflect.

How to get there

As I said earlier, the river is approximately 10 minutes away from Papine. That means its pretty easy to get there. From Papine Town Center you can catch a Gordon Town route taxi that should cost $100. If you prefer to take an Ontime Taxi, they should charge you $400. Remember to request a stop by the all age school.

Food

The river is located in a rural St. Andrew as such there are no fast food restaurants in close proximity to the river. Depending on the day you choose to visit, Jerk Chicken is sold by the cool-out spot at a cost of $500 per quarter. I would advise you to travel with food.

Be sure to let me know when you visit!
